It started in Bayswater near our home in Devonport and went to downtown Auckland,
Viaduct Harbour where the American Cup boat are docked and less than a mile from
my office. The distance was 2.8km. They announced in the prerace meeting that
three Orcas were spotted in the Harbour and we were to "swim at our own risk".
Of course, I took the risk...against Sue pleading...
I finished in just under 53 minutes. It was the longest continous swim I have ever done.
I felt pretty good about it, until I found out a bunch of kids on Maddi's swim team beat
me by 5 to 6 minutes! And one of them didn't even wear a wetsuit!
Of well, it was fun, and something I've wanted to do since we have been here.
The route of the swim is very similar to the ferry route I take every day to work
so I always thought that would be great to swim it!
Sue and I have been doing the Takapuna Beach Series on Tuesday nights.
It is 1000m swim, but will be 1500 next Tuesday. Maddi now wants to do
an ocean swim so we will have to get here in one of these ocean swims,
and then Sue and Maddi want to the Sovereign Series that concludes on
the North Shore in April. The swim is from Rangitoto to Takapuna...another
2.8km swim.
Cheers,
The Evans Fam
